Kaiser Legacy Hospital & CUP
Oakland, CA
Silverado Contractors was contracted to perform the asbestos abatement and interior and structural demolition of a 500,000 SF 14-story hospital tower, mass demolition of the surrounding buildings and Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) contaminated soil excavation removal and disposal. The medical facility was a conglomeration of different structures that were constructed between the 1940’s and the 1980’s. It was a humble facility that served thousands of home front workers during World War II.
The project was located in a mixed-use zone with light commercial use and residential properties surrounding the hospital buildings near downtown Oakland. The medical campus is a fully functioning occupied campus. The tower and associated buildings to be demolished were adjacent to occupied buildings. Silverado coordinated the hospital demolition activities with the Modular Central Utility Plant (MODCUP) utility relocation project and with adjacent buildings that remained to ensure that utility services were not interrupted. This involved coordination with 12KV, 480V and hydronic utility line relocations that ran through the project site.
